Ferguson Bill to Limit IRS Overreach Passes House on Tax Day

Congressman Drew Ferguson (R-Ga.) today released the following statement on the passage of his bill, H.R. 5446, to limit Internal Revenue Service (IRS) overreach.

“It is fitting that on the last day Americans have to live under our outdated tax code, we also passed my legislation to rein in the IRS,” said Ferguson. “H.R. 5446 marks an important step to prevent the IRS from redefining words to suit their own purposes and threatening the livelihoods of American small business owners.”

This legislation would prevent the IRS from inappropriately utilizing same day sale provisions, which can lead to seized property being sold for significantly less than a normal auction would allow, by deeming property non-perishable items as “perishable.”

Today also marks the final day Americans will file under the old tax code. Beginning in 2019, Americans will file their taxes under the flatter, fairer tax code created by the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.

“Americans know how to spend their hard-earned money far better than Washington bureaucrats, and, next year, every taxpayer will be see more money in their paychecks and less sent to Washington,” said Ferguson.
