Ferguson Works to Improve Care for Medically Retired Veterans

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Drew Ferguson (R-Ga.) recently joined Congressman Mike Thompson (D-Calif.) to introduce the Health Equity and Access for Returning Troops and Servicemembers (HEARTS) Act. This bipartisan legislation would make it easier for injured veterans to return to work and keep their Tricare coverage.

Under current law, when veterans return to work and no longer receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), they must continue paying a Medicare Part B premium in order to access TRICARE coverage. This legislation corrects this oversight and ensures veterans aren’t penalized for returning to the workforce.

“We owe a debt of gratitude to service members injured in the line of duty,” said Ferguson. “We must do all we can to ensure they are not disincentivized to return to the workforce and ensure they can access the healthcare benefits they earned. I am proud that this bill does both.”
