Congressman Drew Ferguson (R-Ga.) today spoke at a press conference following the passage of the Strengthening Career and Technical Education (CTE) for the 21st Century Act.

“This legislation is vital to supporting CTE programs like the ones throughout my district,” said Ferguson. “As I have spoken with folks back home, I have heard time and again from business owners about the importance of eliminating the skills gap. Helping our young people transition from school into meaningful careers is one of the best ways we can move into the 21st century economy.”

The bill would enact policies to support current and future CTE programs including:

• Gradually raising total authorization levels for CTE – reaching a total of $1.21B in FY23.
• Permitting states to reserve up to 15% of their Basic State Grants funds for innovative CTE activities in rural areas or areas with higher numbers or concentrations of CTE students.
• Allowing states to set performance goals through an open process that includes input from local education leaders, parents, students, workforce development boards, community and business representatives, and others.
• Encouraging stronger engagement with employers by ensuring local business leaders are involved in development of CTE programs and performance goals.

Ferguson is an original cosponsor of the legislation. The bill now heads to the Senate for consideration.
