I hope this newsletter finds you and your family well! On Friday, the Ways and Means Committee held a markup on the Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act. This tax package restores and expands successful policies from the Trump-era Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA), while promoting greater job creation and providing much-needed relief to American families.

During the markup, I highlighted a committee field hearing in Peachtree City, Georgia in April of last year. At the field hearing, we heard testimony from hardworking small business owners that helped shape this current tax package. David Bergmann, the founder of airplane parts manufacturer NAECO, shared how investments in research and development allowed his business to expand and hire more people in the community. Lisa Winston, the founder of a machining company in Georgia, shared how the TCJA allowed her to keep manufacturing jobs in America and expand production to be able to compete on the global stage. I am thankful to David, Lisa, and everyone who participated in the hearing. Their testimony was crucial in helping us craft pro-growth and pro-business policies.

I was proud to support the passage of the Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act out of committee. This critical legislation helps small businesses, supports working families, and promotes American competitiveness. House Republicans are working to provide for more jobs and greater opportunity for the American people.

Last Wednesday, the Joint Economic Committee held a hearing on policy approaches to increase the supply of affordable housing. The committee discussed rising home prices and housing shortages. While my colleagues were focused on our nation’s cities, I reminded them of the strain high housing costs are putting on our rural communities.

On Thursday, the House Budget Committee held a markup of a number of bipartisan bills aimed at fixing the fiscal state of our nation – and to bring transparency and accountability to our broken budget process. We discussed H.R. 5779, the Fiscal Commission Act of 2023, H.R. 6952, the Fiscal State of the Nation Act, and H.R. 6957, the Debt-to-GDP Transparency and Stabilization Act, which all passed out of committee.

I have often spoken about our broken budget process and how it desperately needs fixing. These bills are commonsense, intellectually honest solutions to our current financial situation.
