Ferguson: Tax Reform Delivers on our Promises

Congressman Drew Ferguson (R-Ga.) today released the following statement following the passage of H.R. 1, the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act:

“With today’s vote, I kept my promise to the folks of the Third District to advance once in a generation tax reform for American families and businesses alike. This legislation provides real tax relief for Georgians, simplifies our complicated tax code and puts the United States back on the path to meaningful economic growth.

“Most importantly, this bill will put more money back in the pockets of hard-working Americans. In fact, under this plan, middle-class families in Georgia will see a $2,355 increase in their after-tax income (Source: U.S. Chamber of Commerce). That is money that folks can use to pay their bills, send their children to college or pay for a vacation; things every American would rather do than send their hard-earned money to a wasteful federal bureaucracy.

“This bill also strengthens the businesses at the heart of our communities. America should be the best place in the world to do business, but for too long our tax code has only encouraged companies to move their jobs and profits overseas. This bill ends that status quo and creates a business-friendly environment for companies of all sizes, and that means more jobs and higher wages for our friends and neighbors.

“Today the House took an important step to move tax reform forward, and I’m encouraged by the Senate’s progress thus far. I urge my Senate colleagues to continue moving forward on tax reform, and I look forward to collaborating with them to finalize a bill that gives all Americans the opportunity to succeed in a thriving economy.”

Ferguson’s bill, the Child Tax Credit Protection Act, which would close a loophole in current tax law that allows unlawful individuals to claim the Child Tax Credit (CTC) deduction without providing a valid social security number, was included in the final package.

The bill passed the House by a vote of 227-205.
