Ferguson Votes to Balance Budget, Kick Off Tax Reform

Congressman Drew Ferguson (R-Ga.) today voted to pass the Fiscal Year 2018 Budget Resolution out of the Committee on the Budget. This budget resolution calls for $621.5 billion in defense spending and $511 billion in non-defense spending for the year and requires Congress to achieve over $200 billion in mandatory cuts.

“This budget is a critical step to getting our economy growing and national debt under control,” said Ferguson. “We are demonstrating that fiscal discipline is possible. Unchecked mandatory spending is on an unsustainable path, and we cannot continue to kick the can down the road any longer. This budget begins the process of reining in our out of control spending but we can, and must, do more.”

“This is not just a conversation about dollars and cents. It is about the Americans who are counting on us to keep our commitments. We must do the tough work of reforming our mandatory spending programs and reforming our tax code. I am proud to support this budget to build a better America and pledge to continue working towards comprehensive mandatory spending reform.”

A few highlights of the budget resolution include:

  • Balancing the federal budget in ten years.
  • Achieving $203 billion in mandatory spending savings.
  • Providing reconciliation instructions to kick-start comprehensive tax reform.
  • Giving the brave men and women of our military the tools they need to protect our freedoms.

The resolution passed out of the committee by a vote of 22-14. It now heads to the House floor for consideration.
